Division of Pediatric Immunology and Rheumatology

The Division of Pediatric Immunology and Rheumatology offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for infants at risk of developing HIV and infants, children, and adolescents with HIV. We also provide consultative care for children and adolescents with other rheumatologic disorders.

The mission of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Pediatric AIDS Program is the provision of clinical care, the conduct of research and the pursuit of educational activities in the areas of pediatric HIV infection of children. The goal of our program is to provide the comprehensive care necessary for HIV-infected infants, children and youth to succeed and become productive and healthy members of the community.

The Division of Immunology is one of the NICHD-funded Clinical trials sites for International Maternal, Pediatric, and Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT). We offer access to state-of-the-art HIV clinical trails through the IMPAACT Network.

Patient Conditions

• Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
• Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
• HIV disease and AIDS

Comprehensive Evaluations

• Assessment of children born to mothers who are HIV-positive or otherwise at risk for HIV
• Assessment of children with suspected or confirmed HIV infection
• Assessment of children with arthritis or other rheumatologic diseases

Specialized Treatments

• Mental Health and support services for children and families impacted by HIV
• Addictions counseling

Research Activities

• Perinatal transmission of HIV
• Experimental protocols for treatment of HIV-infected patients
• Adherence to HIV therapy

Special Cllinics

• PACE evaluates infants at risk for perinatal transmission of HIV and children and adolescents with HIV, and offers comprehensive management of pediatric HIV
• Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic offers evaluation and treatment for children with rheumatologic diseases
• Outreach services for women in the West Baltimore area at risk for HIV
